POLITICAL FACTORS

  • The division of the Roman Empire had already taken place in 395. Both parts of the empire began to develop in their own political-religious-cultural direction.

  • In the mid-eighties, a competition to bring Slavs and Bulgarians under their own influence. The success of Constantinople here infuriated the Pope.

CONSEQUENCES

• Crusade IV turned into the robbery of Constantinople in 1204

 

• The Byzantine (Eastern Roman Empire) fought against Islam alone and lost.

• However, after the disappearance of the Byzantine state, the Orthodox Church

prestige increased.

 

• The Ecumenical Patriarchate was allowed to remain in Constantinople (and is still there, Hagia Sophia was transformed into a mosque, later a museum and in 2020 a mosque)

 

• Moscow's major orthodox center - "Third Rome"

 

• Since the 13th century, efforts to unite between churches and doctrinal attempts at reconciliation.
