Three major world religions: Judaism, Christianity, and Islam consider themselves descended from Abraham. These religions are called the heirs of Abraham.
According to the Old Testament, Abraham came from the Ur of the Chaldeans , a tribe who worshiped many gods. God promised to make Abraham the father of a great nation if he believed this promise and went to a foreign land. "The blessing you receive will be a blessing to all the nations of the world." Abraham went to the land of Canaan with his wife Sarah , his nephew Lot, and his cattle.
There was famine in the Promised Land and Abraham had to move to Egypt. In time, he was able to return and settle down To Hebron, to the oak grove of Mamre, where he erected an altar to God.
Despite God’s promise, Abraham and Sarah had no children. At Sarah's suggestion, Abraham took his servant Hagar to give birth to him the son of Ishmael . After this, Sarah and Abraham, despite being tall, almost a hundred years old, also had a common son, Isaac .
God demanded a new covenant as a sign the circumcision which Abraham and all his male descendants were to observe.
God still tested Abraham’s faithfulness and demanded that the father have to sacrifice his son. Abraham gathered firewood and placed Isaac on the altar. But then God prevented Isaac from being killed: "Touch not the son, do nothing to him." "Now I know that you fear and love God when you did not refuse to sacrifice even your only son."
From Abraham begins the chain of patriarchs. His descendants are: Isaac, Jacob, and Esau, the 12 sons of Jacob, according to the tribes of Israel. was named.
Sarah was 127 years old when she died. Abraham bought him a burial place, the cave of Makpela , where Abraham himself was buried in his time. Today, the cave of Makbela is a sacred place revered by three religions.
